Origin of Name

Virginia was named in 1584 in honor of Queen Elizabeth of England, who was popularly called the "Virgin Queen." The name Virginia is the feminine form of the Latin word Virginius.

Sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana, The Faerie Queen or Good Queen Bess, Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty.

Born on the 7th of September of 1533 and died on the 24th of March of 1603, Queen Elizabeth was Queen of England and Queen of Ireland from the 17th of November of 1558 until her death.
